Former United States President Barack Obama has weighed in on the long-running debate about extraterrestrial life, firmly rejecting claims that aliens are being hidden inside the highly secretive Area 51 facility in Nevada.
Speaking during an interview with political commentator Brian Tyler Cohen, Obama was asked directly whether he believes aliens exist. Responding with his trademark humour, the former president said, “Uh, they’re real, but I haven’t seen them,” before adding that they are certainly not being housed at Area 51.
“And they’re not being kept in, uh, what is it? Area 51,” Obama said. “There’s no underground facility — unless there’s this enormous conspiracy and they hid it from the president of the United States.”
Area 51, officially known as Groom Lake, has operated since 1955 as a classified military testing site. Although long rumoured to exist, the Central Intelligence Agency only publicly acknowledged the base in 2013. Research conducted there remains classified at the highest levels, a secrecy that has helped fuel decades of speculation about UFOs, aliens, and advanced technology.
Public fascination with the site intensified further in 1995, when then-president Bill Clinton signed an order exempting Area 51 from certain environmental disclosure laws, citing national security concerns.
Obama is not the only US leader to have commented on the subject. In 2019, Donald Trump told Fox News that while some military pilots have reported seeing unexplained objects, he personally remained sceptical.
“I don’t want to get into it too much, but personally I doubt it,” Trump said. “I’m not a believer, but I guess anything is possible.”
Interest in unidentified objects has grown in recent years following the release of a US government report examining what it calls Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP). The unclassified document reviewed 120 incidents involving military and government personnel and acknowledged that some sightings remain unexplained.
Despite the renewed attention and persistent conspiracy theories, there is still no official evidence confirming the existence of extraterrestrial life or secret alien facilities on Earth.
