Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has renewed its appeal to the federal government for the immediate release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who has now spent four years in detention.
In a statement released on Friday in Enugu, the group’s National Publicity Secretary, Ezechi Chukwu, urged President Bola Tinubu to invoke his constitutional authority and apply diplomatic channels to secure Kanu’s freedom in the interest of equity, justice, and national reconciliation.
Chukwu noted that June 2025 marks exactly four years since Kanu was arrested in Kenya and subsequently extradited to Nigeria under controversial circumstances.
“The continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu presents a significant moral burden on the credibility of Nigeria’s judicial system,” he said. “His extradition process was unlawful, and the basis for his arraignment remains questionable. It defies logic to keep him detained for four years without a clear path to justice.”
Ohanaeze argued that Kanu’s prolonged incarceration not only deepens grievances in the Southeast but also contradicts the government’s rhetoric on unity and inclusive governance. The group has consistently maintained that a political solution remains the most viable route to resolving issues surrounding Kanu and the wider Biafra agitation.
