Twenty exceptional students from the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, have been selected to benefit from Opay’s N1.2 billion scholarship programme, a 10-year initiative aimed at supporting students in Nigerian universities. Each selected student will receive an annual grant of ₦300,000 to assist with their educational needs.

The announcement was made during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Opay and the University of Uyo on Monday. The event was attended by Opay’s Head of Partnerships, Ikponmwosa Odiase, and members of the university management.

Speaking at the ceremony, Odiase emphasized Opay’s commitment to social responsibility and youth empowerment through its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative.

“We have a responsibility to contribute to the development of our communities,” Odiase said. “This scholarship programme is one way we aim to empower the next generation—our students—who represent the future of Nigeria. In the first phase, we are partnering with 20 higher institutions, offering scholarships to 20 students per institution over the next ten years.”

He added that the partnership with the University of Uyo could extend beyond scholarships, including potential internship opportunities and future employment collaboration.

In his remarks, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Nyaudo Ndaeyo, commended Opay for the initiative and encouraged other organisations to follow suit.

“Success in business isn’t just about longevity—it’s about impact. Opay is a clear example of how to make a meaningful contribution to society,” Prof. Ndaeyo stated. He also affirmed the university’s readiness to collaborate further, offering full support to the company’s initiatives.

With the signing of the MoU, the University of Uyo becomes the 11th institution to join Opay’s N1.2 billion scholarship programme.
