The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed strong confidence in winning the February 2026 Area Council elections in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), insisting it remains politically strong and united in the region.

Speaking during the presentation of certificates to chairmanship and councillorship candidates in Abuja on Tuesday, PDP Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum — represented by the party’s North Central Vice Chairman, Abdulrahman Mohammed — dismissed reports of any coalition involving the PDP in the FCT. There is nothing like a coalition here. Our structure is intact, and no one is defecting, Damagum declared.

This comes amid the recent launch of a new opposition coalition, which includes the PDP, Labour Party, and others under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) banner for the 2027 general elections. However, Damagum made it clear that PDP in the FCT remains independent.

He emphasized that the North Central zone, including the FCT, has consistently supported the PDP and urged party officials to intensify grassroots mobilization. The FCT is home to the PDP, and we intend to keep it that way, he said.

Damagum warned against anti-party behavior, stressing that executives who campaign for or collaborate with rival parties will face disciplinary action. If you’re not ready to work for the party, step aside,” he said. “It’s shameful to see any PDP official promoting opposition partie s. That won’t be tolerated anymore.

He also pledged full support from the national secretariat and assured candidates that the party would protect the integrity of the election process.

FCT PDP Chairman, Ismail Dogara, praised members for a peaceful primary election and called for united efforts ahead of the polls. There were no losers in our primaries. Now, it’s time to work and win, he told candidates.
