PDP Risks Collapse Before 2027 If Crisis Persists — Suswam

Former Benue State Governor and serving senator, Gabriel Suswam, has cautioned that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) risks total collapse before the 2027 general elections unless its leadership urgently addresses the party’s deepening internal crisis.

Speaking on Arise TV’s The Morning Show on Tuesday, Suswam described the PDP’s current state as critical, citing ongoing leadership disputes—particularly over the position of National Secretary—and a recent wave of defections as signs of deeper troubles.

The party recently suffered a major blow in Delta State, where Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, his predecessor Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, and other key figures defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), marking a significant shift in the state’s political dynamics.

“A lot of people are hanging on, waiting to see the ultimate end of this party,” Suswam said, suggesting that many within the PDP have lost faith in its future.

He expressed cautious optimism, however, about efforts being led by former Senate President Bukola Saraki, who is coordinating a group of PDP governors and former governors to stabilize the party.

“Is PDP in the hospital? Yes. Is it in the ICU? To some extent, yes. Can it be rescued? Yes—if the proper medicine is applied,” Suswam said, comparing the party’s condition to that of a critically ill patient.

He stressed that the next two weeks will be crucial for the survival of the party, warning that failure of Saraki’s reconciliation efforts could seal the PDP’s fate ahead of 2027.
