Peter Obi Condemns Vdm’s Arrest, Warns Against Silencing Youth Voices

Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has condemned the arrest of social commentator Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), describing the manner of his apprehension as deeply troubling and harmful to Nigeria’s democratic image.

In a statement shared via his official X handle, Obi criticized the way security operatives—reportedly from the EFCC—arrested VDM on Friday, May 2, stating that the show of force resembled an abduction and raised serious concerns about human rights and the rule of law.

“The arrest, though possibly legal, was carried out in a manner that unsettled many Nigerians. Such displays of force, lacking in civility and transparency, risk being replicated by criminal elements and blur the line between lawful arrests and kidnappings,” Obi said.

He warned that this trend, which has affected even members of the judiciary in the past, undermines public confidence in law enforcement and the legal system. Obi also pointed out the economic implications, citing the backlash faced by GTBank—where VDM was reportedly arrested—as damaging to investor confidence and institutional trust.

“At a time when Nigeria’s business environment is already fragile, such actions can further erode credibility both locally and internationally,” he noted. “Would it not have been better to simply invite Mr. Otse for questioning in a lawful and transparent manner?”

Obi also addressed concerns over the alleged manipulation of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) leadership, warning against the co-opting or silencing of youth voices.

“The oppression of young voices—whether through force, intimidation, or political patronage—is a dangerous path that must not be normalized. Our democracy must be built on open dialogue, respect for human rights, and the protection of all citizens, especially the youth,” he said.

Concluding his message, Obi reiterated his call for a Nigeria where justice is visible, institutions act responsibly, and young people can speak freely without fear.

“A new Nigeria is POssible,” he affirmed.
