President Tinubu names Tunji Disu as Acting IGP following Kayode Egbetokun’s resignation.

Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun as Inspector-General of Police, following the submission of a letter in which Egbetokun cited pressing family considerations.

In a statement issued on Monday, February 24, presidential media aide Bayo Onanuga said the president received the resignation earlier in the day and expressed profound appreciation for Egbetokun’s decades of distinguished service to the Nigeria Police Force and the nation.

Egbetokun, who was appointed in June 2023, was serving a four-year term scheduled to run until June 2027, in line with the amended provisions of the Police Act.

Onanuga announced that, in view of the nation’s current security challenges and in accordance with existing laws and legal guidance, President Tinubu has approved the appointment of Tunji Disu, an Assistant Inspector-General of Police, as Acting Inspector-General of Police with immediate effect.

“The President is confident that AIG Disu’s experience, operational depth, and demonstrated leadership capacity will provide steady and focused direction for the Nigeria Police Force during this critical period,” the statement said.

In compliance with the Police Act 2020, President Tinubu is expected to convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council shortly to formally consider Disu’s appointment as substantive Inspector-General of Police, after which his name will be transmitted to the Nigerian Senate for confirmation.
