Sunjay Kapur, a close friend of Prince William and chairman of global auto parts company Sona Comstar, has died at age 53 after a freak accident during a polo match in England on June 12.
According to The Mirror, Kapur was stung by a bee on the mouth, which led to anaphylactic shock and cardiac arrest. The billionaire businessman collapsed on the field and could not be revived.
Medical experts note that stings inside or near the mouth can be especially dangerous, as they can quickly block airways and cause a severe drop in blood pressure, leading to heart failure.
Kapur, who studied in the UK and was previously married to Bollywood star Karisma Kapoor, was well-known in both India’s elite circles and Britain’s polo community. Just hours before his death, he had posted a tribute on X (formerly Twitter) to the victims of the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad, writing:
“Terrible news of the tragic Air India crash in Ahmedabad. My thoughts and prayers are with all the families affected.”
News of Kapur’s sudden passing has sent shockwaves through social and business communities. Prominent Indian author and actor Suhel Seth paid tribute on social media:
“Deeply saddened at the passing of @sunjaykapur… A terrible loss. Deepest condolences to his family and colleagues.”
Sona Comstar also released a statement:
“We are deeply saddened by the sudden demise of our Chairman, Mr. Sunjay Kapur. He was a visionary leader whose passion and dedication shaped the success of our company.”
Kapur was a familiar face on the UK polo scene and often played in elite matches, including those involving members of the royal family, such as the Prince of Wales.
