The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has called for the immediate cancellation of the ongoing Congress elections, citing widespread irregularities and lack of transparency.
The demand was made during a protest in Abuja on Friday. Speaking to journalists, the FCT SDP Publicity Secretary, Taye Ojo, said the chapter had officially petitioned the party’s National Chairman, Shehu Gabam, urging him to act swiftly.
Ojo, joined by several ward chairmen, outlined key concerns, including the non-disclosure of the nomination form sale process, lack of public notice for the Congress elections, and the disenfranchisement of many party members.
“There was no official communication about when or how nomination forms would be sold, leaving interested members without a chance to participate,” Ojo said. “Furthermore, no notice was issued regarding the Congress election dates, venues, or guidelines. This is a clear breach of due process and the party’s constitution.”
He stressed that the lack of transparency effectively barred eligible members from exercising their rights, violating both democratic principles and the SDP’s commitment to internal democracy.
“In light of these irregularities, we demand the immediate suspension of the Congress elections and the cancellation of all exercises held so far, including those conducted on May 1, 2025,” he added.
The group urged the National Working Committee to take urgent action to protect the party’s credibility and unity.
