Security Alert: US Embassy Urges Americans In Abuja To Remain Home Over Potential Protests

The United States Embassy in Abuja has issued a security alert advising American citizens in Abuja to remain indoors due to the heightened risk of protests linked to the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran.

In a statement released on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, the embassy warned of a “high potential for protests” in the Federal Capital Territory and urged U.S. nationals to exercise increased caution.

“The U.S. Embassy in Abuja informs U.S. citizens that there is a high potential for protests in Abuja today, March 4, 2026, due to the current conflict with Iran,” the notice stated.

The embassy noted that previous demonstrations by certain groups have led to violent clashes with Nigerian security forces. As a precaution, it strongly recommended that U.S. citizens remain at home for the day.

Americans in Abuja were advised to avoid protest areas and large gatherings, monitor local media for updates, and stay alert, particularly in public places such as shopping centres, cinemas and places of worship. The embassy also urged citizens to maintain a low profile, carry valid identification, review personal security plans, keep mobile phones charged, and familiarize themselves with emergency exits when entering buildings. Varying travel routes and times was also recommended to reduce predictability.

Despite the alert, the Consular Sections of the Embassy in Abuja and the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos remain open. Citizens were encouraged to monitor the embassy’s official website for further updates and information.
