Security expert Bulama Bukarti has said that former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai is not above the law, stressing that any investigation into allegations of phone-tapping against him must be conducted transparently.
Bukarti made the remarks on Monday while speaking during an interview on Politics Today, a programme aired on Channels Television.
His comments followed the recent raid on El-Rufai’s residence by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
The anti-corruption agency had disclosed that suspected wiretapping equipment allegedly capable of intercepting private conversations and accessing sensitive security documents was recovered from El-Rufai’s Abuja residence.
Reacting to the development, Bukarti said transparency in the investigation is essential so the public can clearly understand what was discovered.
“Transparency requires that they see what was found in the house, if anything was found. But we don’t know the details,” he said.
He added that the ICPC and other relevant authorities must ensure that El-Rufai receives full due process during the investigation.
“The ICPC and other agencies need to understand that El-Rufai is entitled to full due process of law and his investigation must be transparent. He is not above the law,” Bukarti stated.
