Security Tightened Nationwide As Middle East Crisis Deepens

The Inspector-General of Police, Ag. IGP Olatunji Disu, has assured Nigerians of the Nigeria Police Force’s firm commitment to safeguarding lives, property and national stability amid rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and their possible global impact.

In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Benjamin Hundeyin, the police said that although Nigeria remains stable and its internal security situation is under control, proactive and intelligence-driven policing strategies have been strengthened nationwide.

According to the statement, the acting IGP has directed Commissioners of Police across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory — with particular focus on the North West, North East and North Central regions — to intensify surveillance and intelligence gathering. They have also been instructed to deepen collaboration with traditional and religious leaders, boost visible policing around worship centres and public spaces, and promptly address any attempt to exploit international developments to incite unrest or sectarian tension.

“The Nigeria Police Force reiterates that Nigeria will not serve as a theatre for foreign conflicts. Any attempt to import external ideological or religious tensions into the country will be met with the full weight of the law,” the statement said.

Hundeyin added that IGP Disu called on community leaders to continue promoting peaceful coexistence and urged citizens to remain calm, vigilant and law-abiding. Nigerians were encouraged to report any suspicious activity to the nearest police formation.

He stressed that the Nigeria Police Force remains prepared and fully committed to maintaining national security and protecting all citizens.
