A South African woman has criticised the country’s media over what she described as its silence on the killing of a 22-year-old Nigerian e-hailing driver, Isaac Satlat.
Satlat, who reportedly worked as a cab driver while studying mobile engineering, was killed a few weeks ago after picking up two men and a woman as passengers. According to reports, the suspects allegedly strangled him. Footage from his dashboard camera is said to have captured the attack.
The young driver was reportedly preparing for his graduation next month before the tragic incident occurred.
In a video that has since gone viral, the woman expressed anger over what she sees as selective outrage. She argued that if the roles were reversed and a Nigerian had killed a South African, the story would have dominated headlines and social media platforms.
She accused sections of the media and the public of bias and xenophobia, saying they are often quick to highlight crimes allegedly committed by foreigners but slow to speak up when a foreign national is the victim.
