South Korea’s President Lee Vows Peace, Dialogue With North Korea

South Korea’s newly inaugurated President Lee Jae-myung vowed to “heal the wounds of division and war and establish a future of peace and prosperity” as he began his term on Wednesday.

Lee, who won a snap election decisively, emphasized his commitment to opening communication with North Korea while maintaining defense readiness.

“No matter how costly, peace is better than war,” Lee declared, pledging to “deter North Korean nuclear and military provocations while opening communication channels and pursuing dialogue and cooperation to build peace on the Korean Peninsula.”

Facing global economic challenges like “rising protectionism and supply chain restructuring,” Lee highlighted the urgency of adapting to these threats for South Korea’s survival. His victory signals a shift from the previous administration’s hardline stance on North Korea, with analysts noting his preference for resolving tensions through talks.

Lee’s leadership begins as US tariffs on South Korean steel and aluminum are about to take effect, adding economic pressure. International leaders, including US Secretary of State and Chinese President Xi Jinping, have extended congratulations and support, underscoring the global significance of his presidency.

Citizens in Seoul expressed hope that Lee’s approach will foster unity and long-term positive relations with the North, reflecting a desire for stability in both politics and society.
