Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann has named a much-changed 26-man squad for the upcoming UEFA Nations League semi-finals in June, recalling goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen and including two first-time call-ups.
Nagelsmann made 10 changes to the team due to a wave of injuries that ruled out key players like Jamal Musiala, Antonio Rudiger, Nico Schlotterbeck, and Kai Havertz. He described the situation as “extremely bitter” but emphasized he wouldn’t risk the fitness of recovering players.
Ter Stegen, sidelined since September, returns in goal. “He’s in top shape and is our number one,” said Nagelsmann. The Barcelona keeper has made two league appearances since returning from injury.
Also returning are midfielder Florian Wirtz (Bayer Leverkusen) and striker Niclas Fuellkrug (West Ham), who both missed March’s games.
Making their senior national team debuts are midfielder Tom Bischof, set to join Bayern Munich from Hoffenheim, and Stuttgart’s 1.98-meter-tall striker Nick Woltemade. Nagelsmann praised Woltemade for his “extraordinary skills” and current form.
The squad also sees recalls for Serge Gnabry and Aleksandar Pavlovic (Bayern Munich), Waldemar Anton and Felix Nmecha (Borussia Dortmund), and Robin Gosens (Fiorentina).
Germany earned a home semi-final against Portugal in Munich after defeating Italy in the quarter-finals. Spain and France will contest the other semi-final in Stuttgart.
Despite Germany’s strong Nations League run, Nagelsmann stressed the need for continued intensity: “We can’t afford to go one metre less than we did in the quarter-final against Italy.”
