Textile Workers Union Pushes for Local Fabric Sourcing to Revive Industry

The National Union of Textile, Garment, and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria (NUTGTWN) has urged all levels of government to enforce Executive Order 003, which mandates Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to source uniforms and fabrics locally.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, NUTGTWN President, Mr. Peter Godonu on Sunday lamented that despite the policy—signed during the Buhari administration—many government bodies still import uniforms from abroad.

Godonu stressed that non-compliance with the order has hindered efforts to revive Nigeria’s struggling textile industry.
“We have an Executive Order 003 that says government institutions should source uniforms internally. Yet, most ministries and parastatals still buy from outside the country,” he said.

He noted that if government bodies, schools, and other uniform-using sectors patronized local textile producers, the industry could become a major market and create significant employment opportunities.
“But when government itself looks abroad, how do we grow our factories here? This is a big challenge,” he added.
