The California Supreme Court has declined to review rapper Tory Lanez’s criminal conviction, leaving in place his 10-year prison sentence for shooting fellow artist Megan Thee Stallion in 2020.
On February 25, the state’s highest court rejected a petition from Lanez’s legal team seeking a review of his conviction, according to a court update. The decision comes three months after the California Court of Appeal upheld the verdict.
The case stems from a July 2020 incident in the Hollywood Hills, where Lanez shot Megan Thee Stallion following an argument. In December 2022, he was found guilty of assault with a semiautomatic firearm, possession of a loaded unregistered firearm in a vehicle, and discharging a firearm with gross negligence.
The 33-year-old Canadian rapper was sentenced to 10 years in prison in August 2023. Despite maintaining his innocence, his efforts to overturn the conviction and obtain a new trial have been unsuccessful. He is eligible for parole in August 2029.
In a December 2025 interview with NBC News, Lanez said he believes he was wrongfully convicted and argued that new evidence has emerged since the trial.
When asked what message he would send to Megan, he said he harbors no hatred toward her and would prefer to address her privately rather than through the media. He added that he is focused on healing and taking responsibility for his mistakes, while continuing to call for a review of his case and the evidence presented at trial.
Lanez is currently serving his sentence at California Men’s Colony in San Luis Obispo, California.
