Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has called on the people of the state to disregard critics of his recent defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), insisting that the move was made in the best interest of the state.
Speaking to a large crowd at Victor Attah International Airport upon his return from France on Wednesday, Governor Eno described his decision as strategic, aimed at aligning Akwa Ibom with the federal government to attract greater development opportunities.
“I’m the one in the driver’s seat, and I know the route without traffic or potholes,” Eno said. “This is an Akwa Ibom matter. Many of those shouting are not even from here. I’ve exercised my constitutional right to freely associate.”
He emphasized that his defection was not intended to sow division but to ensure the state benefits from closer ties with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Senate President Godswill Akpabio. “Let’s stay focused,” he urged. “When you’re chasing an elephant, you don’t stop for a barking dog.”
Governor Eno reaffirmed his commitment to peace, unity, and progress, stating that he is guided by divine direction and a desire to lead Akwa Ibom to greater heights.
Also speaking at the reception, APC State Chairman, Obong Stephen Ntukekpo, dismissed criticisms of the governor’s defection as baseless. He praised Eno’s leadership and urged citizens to rally behind him for the benefit of the state.
Secretary to the State Government, Prince Enobong Uwah, who led the welcome team, described the enthusiastic turnout as a sign of public approval and support for a governor who, he said, has performed exceptionally well.
