Chris Piwuna, a professor of medicine and consultant psychiatrist, has been elected as the new president of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). His election was confirmed on Monday by outgoing president Emmanuel Osodeke.
Piwuna, who previously served as ASUU’s national vice president, was elected during the union’s 23rd National Delegates Congress, held from May 8 to 12 at the University of Benin (UNIBEN) in Edo State. He emerged victorious over Professor Adamu Babayo of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) after a four-day voting process.
Although ASUU has not yet released an official statement, Osodeke mentioned that a formal announcement would be made soon. With this victory, Piwuna becomes the 14th president in the union’s history.
A former dean of student affairs at the University of Jos, Piwuna earned his MBBS from the same institution in 2000 and later received a Master’s degree from the University of Malta in 2013. He is a fellow of the West African College of Physicians and a member of the International Psychogeriatric Association.
Currently a consultant psychiatrist at the University of Jos Teaching Hospital, Piwuna previously led the hospital’s psychiatry unit. His academic research focuses on the quality of life in older adults, with several publications in peer-reviewed journals to his name.
