Super Eagles and Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi is recovering well after undergoing emergency surgery for a serious abdominal injury. The 27-year-old has been brought out of an induced coma and is currently under close medical observation.
According to Mail Online, the complex surgical procedure was successfully completed as planned. Awoniyi is now awake and surrounded by family members at the hospital.
The injury occurred during Nottingham Forest’s 2-2 draw with Leicester City on Sunday. Awoniyi collided with the goalpost during the match. Despite receiving treatment on the field and briefly continuing to play, he was eventually taken off after it became clear he could not continue.
Forest had exhausted all their substitutions at the time, having used their final change to bring on Jota Silva for Elliot Anderson. Awoniyi attempted to push through the pain to help his side chase a late winner in their bid for Champions League qualification but was visibly struggling to move.
He was rushed to the hospital on Monday after the full extent of the injury was confirmed.
