The United States Embassy in Nigeria has celebrated Nigerian-American aerospace engineer Wendy A. Okolo for her groundbreaking contributions to science and engineering.
In posts shared across its Facebook, X, and Instagram platforms, the embassy spotlighted Okolo as a barrier-breaking researcher at NASA Ames Research Center, praising her achievements and impact in the aerospace field.
According to the embassy, Okolo earned her doctorate at just 26 and currently leads research focused on flight safety and control optimisation.
She is widely recognised within the aerospace community as the first Black woman to obtain a PhD in aerospace engineering from University of Texas at Arlington. After completing her doctorate, she joined NASA as a research engineer, where she works on advanced aerospace systems, aircraft safety, monitoring technologies, and flight control systems.
The embassy noted that the recognition is part of a broader effort to highlight Nigerians and other immigrants who are excelling in science, medicine, technology, and business across the United States. Nigerians are considered among the most highly educated immigrant groups in the country.
