VP Shettima Unveils Major Power Infrastructure At Borno Varsity

Vice President Kashim Shettima on Sunday commissioned a National Integrated Power Project at Borno State University in Maiduguri. The initiative, undertaken by the Niger Delta Power Holding Company Ltd. (NDPHC), aims to significantly enhance electricity supply to the university and its surrounding communities.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the project comprises a 1×7.5MVA, 33/11KV injection substation, 3 kilometers of 33KV transmission line, 2.5 kilometers of 11KV distribution line, 2.5 kilometers of low tension line, and three 500KVA distribution transformers. It was executed under the Distribution Intervention Projects scheme.

Vice President Shettima emphasized that the project aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes infrastructure development and economic revitalization across the country. “Power is life, and life is power,” he stated, highlighting the transformative impact the project would have on both the university and its neighboring areas.

Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum also lauded the development, noting that low voltage had long hindered reliable power access in the region. “The 7.5MVA substation will improve electricity supply to Maiduguri and key institutions like the university and our upcoming Teaching Hospital,” he said. “We appreciate NDPHC’s continuous support in providing affordable and quality power to our citizens.”

NDPHC Managing Director, Ms. Jennifer Adighije, reaffirmed the company’s dedication to supporting the federal government’s energy goals. She said the Borno project marks the second of four planned distribution interventions in the state for the year. “Our goal is to ensure universal access to quality, reliable, and uninterrupted electricity, reaching even the last mile,” she added.

Abdulrahman Isa, Managing Director of Yola Electricity Distribution Company, noted that the project would support the university’s expansion and improve power reliability for nearby areas, including the 500 Housing Unit Estate, Auno, and Benisheik.

Expressing his gratitude, Vice Chancellor of Borno State University, Prof. Babagana Gutti, thanked President Tinubu, Vice President Shettima, the Borno State Government, and NDPHC for choosing the university as the site for the project.
