Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has praised former Delta State Governor and 2023 PDP vice-presidential candidate, Ifeanyi Okowa, for defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC), calling it a “smart move” and a show of political courage.
Speaking at a media briefing in Abuja on Monday, Wike criticized the PDP for failing to anticipate the defection, describing Okowa as a seasoned and strategic politician. “I’m surprised PDP didn’t see it coming,” Wike said, adding that he had warned party leaders but was ignored.
Wike defended Okowa’s decision as principled, contrasting it with those who he said pretend loyalty while working against the party. He also pointed out that the PDP’s own Board of Trustees Chairman had publicly endorsed a Labour Party governor for re-election, questioning the double standards.
“Okowa chose not to play games,” Wike said. “He made his stand clear, unlike others who pretend. That’s smart politics.”
Wike, a frequent critic of PDP leadership, reiterated that the party’s failure to provide strong leadership is costing it dearly. He argued that Okowa’s exit, along with his team, highlights deeper issues within the party as political realignments intensify ahead of 2027.
