Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Saturday that he will travel to Washington on Monday to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump for talks focused on “ending the killing and the war.”
The announcement came after a phone call between Zelensky and Trump, during which the former U.S. president briefed him on key points from his recent summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska.
“On Monday, I will meet with President Trump in Washington, D.C., to discuss all of the details regarding ending the killing and the war,” Zelensky said. “I am grateful for the invitation.”
Zelensky described the call as a “long and substantive conversation” that began as a private discussion and later included participation from European leaders.
The upcoming meeting comes just days after Trump’s talks with Putin ended without any agreement on a ceasefire or significant progress toward ending Russia’s ongoing invasion, now in its fourth year.
Following the U.S.-Russia summit, Zelensky urged that European allies be included “at every stage” of negotiations and reiterated his willingness to participate in a three-way meeting with both Trump and Putin—a proposal Ukraine supports, but one the Kremlin has so far resisted.
“Ukraine emphasises that key issues can be discussed at the level of leaders, and a trilateral format is suitable for this,” Zelensky stated.
