Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Zulum, has raised serious concerns over the deteriorating security situation in Nigeria’s North-East, revealing that insurgents are now deploying advanced technologies against under-equipped Nigerian troops.
Speaking in an interview with News Central TV on Wednesday, May 21, Governor Zulum issued a passionate plea for urgent collaboration between the federal and state governments to bring an end to the prolonged insurgency.
“The Army currently lacks the necessary equipment to effectively confront the insurgents,” Zulum stated. “What’s even more alarming is that these insurgents are now using sophisticated technology against our soldiers.”
The governor disclosed that the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, had recently informed him of the pressing need for 32 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to enhance military intelligence and operational capability.
“A few days ago, I met with the Chief of Army Staff. He told me he needs 32 drones to tackle the insurgency — and he’s absolutely right,” Zulum said. “Each drone costs about $5.5 million. Why can’t we pool resources together to make this happen? Security must be a priority.”
Zulum also highlighted issues in the procurement process for military equipment, emphasizing the need for direct government-to-government transactions to ensure transparency and value.
“Let’s avoid middlemen. Many of these contractors — not all, but many — take the money and never deliver. Meanwhile, funds often get trapped in bureaucratic bottlenecks within ministries,” he noted.
Despite the challenges, Governor Zulum expressed strong optimism that the insurgency could be defeated swiftly — if the right actions are taken.
“With the right commitment, this madness can end in six months. But we must act decisively,” he declared. “The federal and state governments must unite, depoliticize security matters, and work hand-in-hand. The Federal Government needs to listen to those of us on the ground — we’re ready to contribute our ideas and solutions.”
