Super Eagles winger Ademola Lookman has declared that the team is fully committed to reclaiming the Africa Cup of Nations title for Nigeria in 2025.
The Atalanta forward spoke in the aftermath of Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, following a penalty shootout loss to DR Congo in the final playoff in Rabat, Morocco. Despite the disappointment, Lookman emphasized that the setback has strengthened the team’s resolve ahead of AFCON.
Speaking with Elegbete TV Sports, Lookman admitted that missing out on the World Cup was painful but insisted the squad is determined to turn that frustration into motivation.
“It’s exciting. It’s another competition for us to go out there and prove ourselves again, so it’s a pleasure to have that pressure on us. We are happy to be here,” he said.
“The reality of missing the World Cup is disappointing for all of us and for the nation. Hopefully, we can turn that pain into something positive and powerful that drives us forward. Right now, my focus is on performing, helping the team in Morocco, and hopefully bringing glory back home.”
Lookman also reflected on Nigeria’s near triumph at the last AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire, where the Super Eagles finished as runners-up.
“Last time in Abidjan, we came so close but didn’t win. Maintaining the togetherness and unity within the squad is very important for us. That’s what keeps us going,” he added.
The winger concluded by stressing that strong performances and collective effort will be crucial to Nigeria’s success at the tournament.
“We have to show quality in our games and demonstrate togetherness in our fight. This team has that, and once everything comes together, things will be great.”
