Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was evacuated from The Lodge in Canberra on Monday evening following a security incident that prompted a significant police operation.
The Australian Federal Police (AFP) confirmed it responded to an “alleged security incident” at around 6pm, leading to the prime minister being moved to another location for several hours as a precaution.
In a statement, the AFP said a “thorough search of a protection establishment was undertaken and nothing suspicious was located,” adding that there is “no current threat to the community or public safety.”
A spokesperson for the prime minister said: “We trust the AFP to do their jobs and thank them for their work.”
The AFP indicated that further details would be released at a later time.
The incident comes amid growing concerns about threats directed at politicians, with reports of threatening letters recently sent to independent senators Lidia Thorpe and Fatima Payman.
Authorities say they continue to monitor the situation closely as part of broader efforts to ensure the safety of elected officials.
