Mikel Merino rescued Arsenal as the Premier League leaders were held to a fiery 1-1 draw by 10-man Chelsea in a bad-tempered London derby on Sunday.

Chelsea’s Moisés Caicedo was sent off late in the first half for a reckless challenge on Merino at Stamford Bridge. Despite the dismissal, Trevoh Chalobah headed Chelsea into the lead early in the second half, only for Merino to haul Arsenal level and ensure the Gunners escaped a bruising showdown with a point.

Arsenal remain five points ahead of second-placed Manchester City, who beat Newcastle on Saturday, and sit six clear of third-placed Chelsea. While Arsenal missed the chance to widen the gap on their title rivals, Chelsea were relieved to avoid a costly defeat.

The Gunners are still favourites to claim their first Premier League title since 2004, but Chelsea’s gritty display suggested they may be the biggest threat to Arsenal’s ambitions. Arsenal are unbeaten in 17 matches across all competitions—winning 14—while Chelsea have now gone seven without defeat.

Both sides arrived buoyed by midweek Champions League victories—Chelsea’s 3-0 win over Barcelona and Arsenal’s 3-1 triumph against Bayern Munich—but that momentum evaporated quickly as tempers flared in west London.

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca had downplayed his young side’s title chances, yet they matched Arsenal stride for stride despite the visitors missing injured centre-back William Saliba. The first half was frenetic and littered with bookings: Martin Zubimendi hauled down Reece James, Marc Cucurella clattered Bukayo Saka, Mosquera floored Joao Pedro, and Riccardo Calafiori pulled back James.

Saka nearly punished Cucurella moments later, forcing Robert Sanchez into a sharp save at his near post. Chelsea’s 18-year-old sensation Estevão Willian, fresh off his standout performance against Barcelona, fired over from 10 yards with his side’s first major chance. Enzo Fernández then tested David Raya as Chelsea pressed the reshuffled Arsenal back line.

The match turned ugly in the 38th minute when Caicedo caught Merino’s ankle with a dangerous foul that VAR upgraded from yellow to red—Chelsea’s sixth sending-off this season. Seconds later, Hincapié elbowed Chalobah, prompting Chelsea demands for another red that went ignored. Just before the break, Gabriel Martinelli forced Sanchez into a superb save.

Arsenal, the league’s most dangerous side from set pieces, were undone by Chelsea—the second-best—when James curled in a near-post corner and Chalobah rose highest to nod home in the 48th minute.

Mikel Arteta responded by introducing Martin Ødegaard and Noni Madueke, who received hostile chants of “Chelsea reject” from home fans. The changes paid off immediately: in the 59th minute, Saka danced past Cucurella and delivered a pinpoint cross for Merino, who powered a close-range header past Sanchez for his fourth goal of the season.

A frantic conclusion saw Sanchez deny both Saka and Merino with excellent saves, but Arsenal couldn’t produce a decisive winner.
