The Cross River State House of Assembly has suspended Theresa Ushie, Chairman of Bekwarra Local Government Area, for three months following a petition from members of the Bekwarra Legislative Council accusing her of abuse of office and misappropriation of funds.
The suspension was announced in a statement by Matthew Okache, Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, citing Section 14(3) of the Cross River State Local Government Law.
The statement reads in part:
“In a resolution passed on the House floor, the Assembly directed Hon. Theresa Ushie to step aside for 90 days to allow an independent investigation into the allegations without interference. The Assembly upheld the impeachment notice submitted by eight of the ten Bekwarra councilors. The petition, dated May 19, 2025, accuses Hon. Ushie of financial misappropriation, administrative high-handedness, and gross abuse of power, alleging she repeatedly undermined due process and the rule of law.”
Vice Chairman Egbung Odama has been instructed to assume office as Acting Chairman for the duration of Ushie’s suspension, with a mandate to ensure stability and effective management of the council.
Speaker Elvert Ayambem said the Assembly’s decision reflects a commitment to transparency, accountability, and good governance at the grassroots level.
“I urge the House committees on Judiciary and Public Petition to begin a thorough investigation and submit their findings within the suspension period,” he added.
