The Kano State Fire Service has confirmed the deaths of four individuals who drowned in a blocked waterway at Zangon Kaya, in the Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area.

In a statement issued on Friday by the Fire Service’s Public Relations Officer, Saminu Abdullahi, the incident occurred in the afternoon around 1:48 p.m.

According to Abdullahi, the victims were trapped in a waterway obstructed due to railway construction work. “Two of the victims entered the waterway to swim and got trapped. Another person attempted to rescue them and also got stuck, followed by a fourth person who met the same fate,” he said.

Rescue efforts began immediately after an emergency call from one Rabiu Yusif. Residents managed to pull out two victims before the fire service team arrived and recovered the remaining two.

The deceased have been identified as Bashir Sani (28), Nasirudden Tasi’u (25), Usman Ubale (26), and Yakubu Muhammed (22). All were found unconscious and later pronounced dead. Their bodies were handed over to SP Abdulkadir Albasu of the Dawanau Police Division.

Abdullahi attributed the tragedy to “local swimming in a blocked sewer.”
