Full List Of DIGs Poised To Retire After Disu’s Promotion

President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday appointed AIG Tunji Disu as the acting Inspector-General of Police, following the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun.

Egbetokun stepped down citing pressing family reasons. Appointed in June 2023, he was originally serving a four-year term set to end in June 2027, in line with the amended provisions of the Police Act. In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President expressed gratitude for Egbetokun’s service to the nation.

Prior to his appointment, Disu was the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex in Alagbon, Lagos.

In Nigeria, it is customary—though not legally required—for senior police officers to retire when a junior officer is appointed IGP, reflecting the force’s respect for hierarchy and organizational stability.

PUNCH Online has identified several Deputy Inspectors-General (DIGs) who may be affected by Disu’s appointment:

Frank Mba – Began his career as an Inspector and steadily rose through the ranks to become AIG in March 2023. He has served three times as National Spokesman of the Nigeria Police Force and received a UN medal for his service in Liberia.

Mohammed Gumel – Appointed 4th DIG in charge of the Force Intelligence Department at Force Headquarters, Abuja, in late 2025/early 2026. Known for community policing, he was previously Commissioner of Police and awarded Best Community Policing Advocate of 2024.

Adebola Hamzat – DIG overseeing the Department of Logistics and Supply, appointed in March 2025. Previously AIG for Zone 16 (Yenagoa) and Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, he manages procurement, housing, and technical needs across the force.

Yahaya Abubakar – DIG in charge of Finance and Administration at Police Force Headquarters, responsible for budgeting, HR, and administration. Promoted by the Police Service Commission in 2024.

Basil Idegwu – DIG heading the Department of Research and Planning since March 2025. Holds a Ph.D. in Peace and Security Studies and is responsible for strategic planning and operational efficiency.

Bzigu Kwazhi – DIG of the Department of Operations, overseeing operational activities, crime prevention, and law enforcement nationwide. Played key roles in high-level security assessments in Plateau and Adamawa states in 2025.

Idris Abubakar – Joined the police as a cadet ASP in 1992. Holds a B.Sc. in Education from Utman Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, and an M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Abuja.

Adebowale Williams – DIG heading the Department of Information and Communication Technology, managing the force’s technological infrastructure and digital systems to support modern policing.

Disu’s elevation marks a significant reshuffle in Nigeria’s police leadership, with senior officers expected to make way in line with established customs of hierarchy and succession planning.
