
The Nigerian government has disclosed that 13,597,057 social media accounts were closed down across platforms like TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and X for offensive content and violations of the Code of Practice.
This was contained in the Code of Practice 2024 Compliance Report submitted by major platforms including Google, Microsoft, and TikTok.
According to the report, jointly issued by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), a total of 58,909,112 offensive contents were removed, while 754,629 complaints were received from users.
NITDA spokesperson Hadiza Umar added that about 420,439 pieces of content were taken down and later re-uploaded following successful appeals.
The agency commended tech giants for complying with the Code of Practice, stressing that the move is part of efforts to foster a safer and more responsible digital environment in Nigeria.
