Flamengo Sack Filipe Luís Hours After 8–0 Semi-Final Victory

Brazilian club Flamengo have dismissed head coach Filipe Luís just hours after he guided the team to an 8–0 victory over Madureira in the Campeonato Carioca semi-final.

The 40-year-old former Chelsea defender had overseen an emphatic 11–0 aggregate triumph to book Flamengo’s place in the Carioca final, where they are scheduled to face Fluminense on Sunday.

In a statement, the club announced his departure:

“Filipe Luís will no longer be in charge of the professional team. Ivan Palanco (assistant coach) and Diogo Linhares (physical trainer) are also leaving the club along with him.

“Flamengo thanks former player and coach Filipe Luís for everything achieved and shared during this journey. The club wishes him success and the best of luck in the continuation of his professional career.”

Despite the commanding 8–0 win, sections of the Flamengo supporters were heard chanting “shameless” at the players during the match.

Flamengo currently sit 11th in the Brazilian Serie A standings, with one win and one draw from three matches, six points behind leaders Palmeiras, though they have a game in hand.

Luís took charge on September 24, replacing former Brazil head coach Tite. During his tenure, he managed 100 matches and won seven trophies.

Among his achievements was leading Flamengo to the 2025 Copa Libertadores title, becoming only the ninth person to win the competition both as a player and as a coach. He had previously lifted the Libertadores twice as a player with the club in 2019 and 2022.

He also secured Serie A, Copa do Brasil, Supercopa do Brasil, Campeonato Carioca, FIFA Challenger Cup, and FIFA Derby of the Americas titles.

Before taking over the senior team, Luís managed Flamengo’s U-17 and U-20 sides, guiding both to league titles.
