Former First Lady Dame Patience Jonathan has been awarded an honorary Doctorate Degree in Psychology, Guidance, and Counselling by Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Port Harcourt. The recognition came during the institution’s 43rd Convocation Ceremony, held on Saturday.
The event, which gathered dignitaries, students, and well-wishers, also turned into a spirited celebration led by women’s groups, particularly Rivers Women Unite for SIM, headed by Sotonye Toby Fult. A viral video from the event captured the former First Lady dancing joyfully with the group as they sang the popular, and somewhat controversial, chant: “Na our mama be this ooo…”
Dame Jonathan, known for her expressive and down-to-earth demeanor, addressed the women in her signature Pidgin English, saying: “Make una come. Make we snap, let’s go and eat,” as she posed for photos before heading off with the group.
Social media was abuzz following the release of the video, with reactions ranging from admiration to amusement.
An X (formerly Twitter) user, @escanor224, remarked: “Awwwn, I’m happy for Patience Jonathan. From ‘na only you waka come’ to getting a PhD. This is why I keep saying bad English is not a marker of intellect.”
Another user, @XtyleL2909, offered a more skeptical take: “This is satire of the week! Is Patience Jonathan really celebrating a doctorate degree or is this a subtle jab at another ‘Mama’?”
Meanwhile, @obigoestoschool commented on her evolving public image: “Patience Jonathan now has a doctorate. From ‘na only you waka come’ to Dr. Patience. Hope those who mocked her are still fluent in bitterness?”
The honorary degree marks a new chapter in the public life of the former First Lady, whose unconventional communication style and memorable expressions have long sparked debate—but also endeared her to many Nigerians.
