I’m Surprised That My Promise To Serve Only One 4-Year Term Is Causing So Much Uproar. – Peter Obi

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, says he is surprised by the public agitation over his commitment to serve only one term of four years if elected president.

In a statement shared on social media Tuesday morning, Obi said that skepticism around his pledge suggests a lack of belief that a sincere leader can deliver meaningful change in just four years.

I still find it baffling that my decision to do a term of four years, if given the mandate to rule this country, is generating so much agitation,” he said. “By this reaction, we are doubting that a sincere leader can achieve much in 48 months.

Obi emphasized that he is not driven by personal ambition, but by a genuine desire to see Nigeria succeed.

What drives me is not personal ambition, but a deep commitment to see Nigeria work. And if that means four years of sincere, accountable leadership, so be it.

He distanced himself from the typical desperation seen in politics, adding that he has never been involved in electoral malpractice or political violence.

I challenge anyone: conduct your investigations. You will find no stains of rigging or violence associated with my name. I have always chosen the path of peace, principle, and civility.

Obi believes that, within a four-year term, Nigeria can:

  • Fight corruption effectively
  • Redirect resources to critical areas like education, healthcare, and infrastructure
  • Strengthen the rule of law
  • Conduct free, fair, and credible elections

He criticized the current misuse of public funds, citing the acquisition of new presidential jets as an example of misplaced priorities.

Leadership, to me, is not about entitlement. It is about service. If given the mandate, for just one term, I will dedicate every moment to building a Nigeria that works for all.
