Labour Party Reps Slam Demolition Of Peter Obi’s Brother’s Property

The Labour Party (LP) caucus in the House of Representatives has strongly condemned the demolition of a property belonging to the brother of Peter Obi, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, calling the incident “deeply disturbing.”

The property, located in Ikeja, Lagos, was reportedly demolished on Tuesday under controversial circumstances.

In a statement on Wednesday, LP caucus leader Afam Ogene urged the Lagos State Government and the APC-led administration to protect Obi and his business interests, stressing his role as a prominent opposition figure.

Ogene said the demolition allegedly followed a court order obtained through unclear means, with neither the property owner nor any party made aware of such an order. He criticized the reported misuse of the judiciary, warning that it undermines democracy and due process.

“This incident echoes Peter Obi’s recent warning of targeted attacks on him and his businesses, due to his decision to contest the presidential election and speak out on the nation’s worsening hardship and insecurity,” Ogene stated.

He emphasized that political opposition should never result in harm or persecution, adding, “Politics must be free from bitterness and acts that inflict economic, physical, or psychological harm.”

Describing Obi as a “staunch democrat,” Ogene said his popularity across ethnic and political lines is rooted in his compassion for the poor and his consistent call for good governance.

“His and his family’s lawful business activities should be protected like those of every Nigerian citizen—not destroyed by partisan vendettas,” he added.

Reacting to the demolition, Peter Obi also condemned what he termed “coordinated lawlessness” in the country.

“I know what I have personally endured—violations of my rights—just for exercising my constitutional right to contest an election,” Obi said. “If this can happen to someone with legal business interests, what hope does the ordinary Nigerian have?”
