Manchester United have issued a statement after the X (formerly Twitter) account of club captain Bruno Fernandes was hacked following the team’s FA Cup third-round defeat to Brighton.
The Red Devils skipper’s account was compromised late on Sunday night, with a series of unusual posts appearing shortly after 11pm. The activity came in the aftermath of United’s exit from the competition.
The first of the bizarre messages claimed Fernandes had joined Macclesfield FC, referencing the National League North side that knocked out FA Cup holders Crystal Palace on Saturday. Another post appeared to target the club’s ownership, calling for the removal of INEOS.
Further posts tagged adult film star Bonnie Blue, the England cricket team, YouTuber KSI, and world darts champion Luke Littler. One of the final messages shared an image of Manchester United’s 7–0 defeat to Liverpool in 2023.
In response, Manchester United released a statement warning fans not to interact with the account while the issue is being addressed.
“Bruno Fernandes’ X account has been hacked,” the club said. “Supporters should not engage with any of the posts or direct messages until further notice.”
