Manchester United teenagers Harry Amass and Chido Obi have appeared to respond to public criticism from head coach Ruben Amorim through cryptic social media posts that were later deleted.
The posts followed comments from Amorim after he was questioned about his limited use of academy graduate Kobbie Mainoo. In his response, the Portuguese coach suggested that younger players such as Amass and Obi are not yet performing at the required level.
“I don’t know what the future holds for Mainoo,” Amorim said. “Let’s see after this match. Amass is struggling in the Championship, and Chido Obi is not always a starter for the Under-21s. All these guys played when people were calling for the manager to be sacked.”
Shortly after those remarks, Amass shared a photo on social media of himself smiling while holding his November Player of the Month award from Wednesday night. The post, which included a smiley-face emoji, was deleted within minutes. Sources close to the player say his camp is unhappy with Amorim’s comments.
Obi, who is currently sidelined with injury, posted a similar response, sharing an image of himself celebrating a goal for United’s Under-21 side. That post was also deleted soon after being published, and the 18-year-old has since removed all references to Manchester United from his social media bio.
Despite Amorim’s comments, Obi is joint-top scorer for United’s Under-21s this season, sharing the lead with Gabriele Biancheri. Club sources say Obi’s limited starts are largely due to rotation policies aimed at giving both players equal opportunities.
Both Amass and Obi made their first-team debuts under Amorim during the 2024–25 campaign. Obi has made eight senior appearances, seven as a substitute, while Amass has featured seven times, including four Premier League starts.
