Michael Carrick has reached a verbal agreement with Manchester United to take over as interim head coach until the end of the season.
The former United midfielder will replace his ex-teammate Darren Fletcher in the Old Trafford dugout. Fletcher had stepped up from his role as Under-18s coach to lead the first team following the sacking of Ruben Amorim.
During his brief spell in charge, Fletcher oversaw a 2–2 draw at Burnley before United were knocked out of the FA Cup, with former striker Danny Welbeck scoring the winner for Brighton.
Carrick will now take charge until the summer. The 44-year-old, a five-time Premier League winner, previously served as caretaker manager for three matches in late 2021 after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s dismissal, before Ralf Rangnick was appointed interim boss.
Former Chelsea and England assistant manager Steve Holland is set to join Carrick’s coaching staff at Old Trafford.
United held face-to-face talks with Carrick, a former club captain, on Thursday, and with Solskjaer — scorer of the winning goal in the 1999 Champions League final — on Saturday.
Carrick is expected to be in the dugout for Saturday lunchtime’s Manchester derby
