On Thursday, Manchester United officially announced the signing of Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers on a five-year contract.
The club confirmed via its website that the 26-year-old has committed to a deal running until June 2030, with an option to extend for an additional year. Cunha’s transfer represents United’s first major signing of the summer transfer window.
Since joining Wolves, Cunha has made a strong impression in the Premier League. Speaking about his move to Old Trafford, he described it as the realization of a lifelong dream.
“It’s difficult to express how I feel about becoming a Manchester United player. Ever since I was a child in Brazil watching Premier League matches at my grandmother’s house, United was my favourite English team, and I always dreamed of wearing the red jersey. I’m grateful to my family and everyone who helped me achieve this dream,” Cunha said.
He continued, “I’m eager to start pre-season, get to know my new teammates, and prepare for the challenges ahead. My full focus is on working hard to become a valuable member of the squad and helping the club return to the top.”
Jason Wilcox, Manchester United’s director of football, described Cunha’s signing as a vital step in the club’s plans for the upcoming season.
“Securing Matheus was one of our top priorities this summer, so we’re thrilled to finalize his transfer early in the window,” Wilcox stated.
“He has demonstrated his ability to thrive in the Premier League, establishing himself as one of the most exciting and effective forwards in England during his time at Wolves, as well as in Spain and Germany before that. He possesses all the attributes we seek as we aim to build a strong, dynamic, and entertaining team capable of competing for major honours,” he added.
Cunha’s arrival is expected to strengthen United’s attacking options as the club looks to rebuild and challenge for titles following a disappointing previous season.
