Massive Crowd Gathers as Lagos PDP Swears In New Executives

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State defied predictions of its collapse over the weekend, drawing a huge crowd to inaugurate a new set of executives across ward, local government and state levels.

After a disappointing outing in the last general elections—where it lagged behind the Labour Party—and a wave of defections to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC), many had written off the party’s Lagos chapter. Internal disputes and legal battles further deepened the perception that the once-formidable opposition platform had reached its lowest point.

But the impressive turnout at the Ikeja venue told a different story. Party faithful from all 20 local government areas were present, signalling that grassroots structures remain intact. The influx of supporters caused heavy traffic around the area, prompting officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) to manage vehicular movement.

The inauguration ceremony, conducted by Barrister Ayodele Olaniyi, saw Dr. Amos Fawole formally assume office as state chairman alongside other newly elected executives. Party leaders described the moment as a fresh beginning and a sign of renewed unity.

A prominent party stalwart, Bode George, expressed optimism about the PDP’s revival. He maintained that the party remains a national force despite pressure from the ruling APC and recent defections. Referring to the PDP as resilient, he urged members to remain steadfast and resist intimidation, arguing that the challenges facing the party are temporary.

George also criticised the APC and raised concerns about the role of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), alleging bias and warning against any attempt to undermine opposition parties ahead of the 2027 elections. According to him, public dissatisfaction with current policies could reshape the political landscape in the next electoral cycle.

In his acceptance speech, Dr. Fawole described the inauguration as more than a routine exercise. He said it marked a commitment to rebuild the party, strengthen internal discipline and present a credible alternative for Lagos residents. He emphasised organisation, unity and sacrifice as key to repositioning the PDP in the state.

Other party leaders, including former Deputy Governor Kofoworola Bucknor-Akerele and Chief (Mrs.) Aduke Maina, echoed similar sentiments, encouraging loyalty among members and expressing confidence in the party’s future.

The scale of attendance at the event appeared to counter claims that the PDP has lost relevance in Lagos. For party loyalists, the gathering symbolised resilience and a renewed determination to reclaim political ground in the state and nationally.
