Ned Nwoko Opposes Call For New Constitution, Backs Amendments

Senator Ned Nwoko, who represents Delta North in the National Assembly, has pushed back against growing calls to discard Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution, insisting that the document remains relevant and effective.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Friday, Nwoko described the constitution as a “working document” that continues to provide a functional framework for governance in the country.

“Personally, I do not support the idea of discarding the current constitution to draft an entirely new one. It has been guiding governance in Nigeria and remains workable,” he said.

While acknowledging that the constitution is not without flaws, the senator emphasized that necessary improvements should be made through amendments rather than a total rewrite.

“There’s no such thing as a perfect constitution anywhere in the world. What can be done is to propose targeted amendments that reflect the will of the people,” he added.

His comments come amid growing demands from civil society groups and some political leaders who argue that a fresh constitution is essential to address Nigeria’s persistent structural and governance issues.
