NERC Cautions Public: Do Not Touch Electrocuted Victims

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has released a public safety advisory urging residents to stay clear of live electrical wires and refrain from touching anyone currently in contact with electricity.

In a statement posted on its official X account, the commission warned that electricity is extremely hazardous and that attempting to rescue a victim without proper safety measures could result in serious injury or death. It explained that while the urge to help may be immediate, touching an electrocuted person with bare hands or pulling them away from a live source can transfer the electric current to the rescuer.

NERC advised members of the public never to handle live wires or electrocuted victims directly. Instead, they should maintain a safe distance, ensure bystanders do the same, and promptly notify the nearest electricity distribution company or emergency responders.

The commission stressed that electrical emergencies should only be handled by trained professionals with the appropriate equipment, noting that responsible actions can prevent further casualties and save lives.

The advisory is part of NERC’s ongoing awareness campaign to reduce accidents associated with fallen power lines and other electricity-related dangers. Residents were encouraged to circulate the warning widely to help protect their communities.
