Niger State Flood: Death Toll Hits 151, Over 3,000 Displaced

The death toll from the devastating flood that swept through communities in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State has climbed to 151, with 3,018 people displaced, according to the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA).

In a statement released Saturday morning, NSEMA revealed that the flooding affected three communities, destroyed two bridges, and washed away two major roads.

Director General of the agency, Abdullahi Baba-Arah, confirmed that 503 households were impacted, with 265 homes completely washed away. He also reported that 11 people were injured in the disaster.

The latest update from the Mokwa flood shows that 151 corpses have so far been recovered, while 11 persons were injured. A total of 3,018 individuals have been displaced, 503 households affected, and 265 homes washed away. Two roads and two bridges were also destroyed, Baba-Arah said.

The flood, which struck during a heavy downpour on Wednesday night, submerged and swept away more than 50 residential buildings, particularly in the Tiffin Maza and Anguwan Hausawa areas of Mokwa town.

NSEMA had earlier described the incident as a deadly flood disaster, highlighting the scale of destruction and the urgent need for humanitarian assistance in the affected communities.
