Henry Ezeonyido, a 37-year-old Nigerian-American from Taunton, Massachusetts, has been sentenced to 27 months in federal prison for leading a $1 million health care fraud scheme. Between 2019 and 2022, Ezeonyido and his co-conspirators filed false insurance claims using fabricated documents for fake medical treatments allegedly received overseas.
The scheme involved claims of severe injuries like stabbings and gunshot wounds, with fraudulent hospital records and police reports. Investigators found that the supposed patients were actually in the U.S. at the time.
Ezeonyido pleaded guilty to conspiracy and multiple counts of fraud, and was ordered to pay over $655,000 in restitution and forfeit nearly $400,000. His co-defendants, who also pleaded guilty, received probation.
Federal authorities emphasized that fraud schemes like this inflate insurance costs and vowed continued prosecution of health care fraud.
