Israel Osamudiame Friday, a Nigerian student and basketball player at the University of the Philippines (UP), tragically died during a training session on Tuesday, August 19.
The 19-year-old athlete collapsed while practicing with the UP Fighting Maroons at the Varsity Training Centre in Diliman. He was immediately given first aid by the team’s physical therapists and rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The cause of death has not yet been confirmed, pending further medical examination.
Friday, who would have turned 20 on September 6, had recently joined UP after transferring from Centro Escolar University (CEU), where he played for the Scorpions in the University and Colleges Athletic League (UCAL). Standing at 6 feet 10 inches, he was regarded as one of the most promising young forwards in the Philippine collegiate basketball scene.
In a statement published by Spin.ph, Bo Perasol, Director of UP’s Office for Athletics and Sports Development, confirmed the incident:
“UP is heartbroken to confirm that one of our newest recruits, Israel Osamudiame, collapsed during practice yesterday. He was immediately brought to a nearby hospital where, despite the efforts of medical personnel, he passed away.”
Mr. Perasol added that the university is deeply saddened and is providing full support to Friday’s family.
“UP is in close contact with his family and is extending its full support during this difficult time. The university asks everyone to respect the privacy of his family as they grieve this tragic loss.”
Friday was expected to sit out the current season under league residency rules before becoming eligible to play in UAAP Season 89. His arrival at UP had been seen as a major boost to the team’s future prospects.
The university community and Philippine basketball fans are mourning the loss of a young talent whose potential and passion left a lasting impression in a short time.
