Nimet Predicts Thunderstorms From Wednesday To Friday

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast widespread thunderstorms and rainfall across the country from Wednesday to Friday. In its weather outlook released on Tuesday in Abuja, NiMet highlighted varying weather patterns for the northern, central, and southern regions.

For Wednesday, early morning thunderstorms are expected in parts of Taraba, Kaduna, and Adamawa in the North. Later in the day, more thunderstorms with rain are anticipated in Kebbi, Zamfara, Katsina, Kano, Sokoto, Gombe, Bauchi, and Taraba states.

In the North-Central region, morning thunderstorms may affect Benue, Kwara, Niger, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and Nasarawa. The afternoon and evening hours are expected to bring further rainfall and thunderstorms to the FCT, Niger, Kwara, Kogi, Nasarawa, and Plateau.

The southern region will see cloudy conditions in the morning with possible rain in Ondo, Ekiti, and Edo. Later, isolated thunderstorms and rain are forecast for states including Imo, Enugu, Abia, Ebonyi, Anambra, Oyo, Ogun, Edo, Delta, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, and Rivers.

On Thursday, NiMet projects morning thunderstorms for Kaduna, Kebbi, Zamfara, Adamawa, and Taraba, with additional rainfall later in the day extending to Kano, Gombe, and Bauchi. The North-Central region will experience similar patterns, while the southern region may see morning rain in Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River, followed by afternoon thunderstorms across several southern states.

By Friday, thunderstorms are forecast for Jigawa, Gombe, Bauchi, Adamawa, and Taraba in the morning, with continued rainfall expected in Taraba, Kano, Kaduna, and Bauchi by afternoon. The North-Central and Southern regions are also likely to experience significant rainfall and thunderstorms throughout the day.

NiMet warned that strong winds may precede the rains in many areas. The agency advised the public to take safety precautions, including securing loose objects, avoiding driving during heavy rain, disconnecting electrical appliances, and staying clear of tall trees during storms. Airline operators were also urged to obtain detailed weather reports for flight planning.
