Obi To Critics: Speaking The Truth About Nigeria Isn’t De-Marketing The Country

Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has responded to recent accusations of de-marketing Nigeria, stating that speaking the truth about the country’s challenges is essential for national progress.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, Obi insisted his comments about Nigeria’s economic and political issues are intended to help, not harm, the country. His response comes shortly after Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu criticized him for allegedly portraying Nigeria negatively during a speech in the United States.

“I tried reminding those who argue that I de-market Nigeria by telling the truth about its economic and social status vis-à-vis the rest of the world that truth does not in any way de-market a nation,” Obi wrote. “Rather, it refines and strengthens it.”

He cautioned against using truth as a political weapon, saying doing so disrespects the sacrifices of past national leaders.

Speaking at a memorial lecture for elder statesman Chief Edwin Clark, where he appeared alongside former President Goodluck Jonathan and ex-Head of State Yakubu Gowon, Obi reflected on the silence of past government critics amid today’s worsening conditions.

“Where are those who, in 2012 and 2013, protested when fuel, exchange rates, and food prices rose modestly under Jonathan? Today, those same prices have increased tenfold, yet we hear nothing,” he remarked.

Obi also highlighted Nigeria’s deepening insecurity, poverty, and governance failures, stressing the need to restore integrity in public service and ensure that the country works for every citizen—not just a privileged few.

His remarks follow Sanwo-Olu’s criticism on April 28, where the Lagos governor argued that prominent Nigerians should promote the country’s image abroad instead of speaking negatively on international platforms.
