Peter Obi Criticizes Harsh Flight Ban On Young Passenger

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has strongly criticised the lifetime flight ban imposed on Comfort Emmanson by Ibom Air and the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON), following an incident of alleged misconduct. In a statement shared via his X (formerly Twitter) account on Tuesday, Obi questioned the fairness and due process behind the decision, calling it a reflection of deeper systemic injustice.

The incident, captured in viral videos posted online on August 10, 2025, showed Emmanson—a woman in her twenties—engaging in a heated confrontation with an Ibom Air flight attendant and airport security at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja. The altercation led to swift disciplinary actions: Ibom Air barred her from its flights, while AON placed her on a permanent no-fly list. She was later remanded in Kirikiri Correctional Centre, with her next court date set for October 6.

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), through its director of public affairs and consumer protection, Mike Achimugu, noted that while the airline has the right to pursue legal action, both parties could still reach an out-of-court settlement.

Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, raised concerns about the speed and severity of the punishment meted out to Emmanson. He cited the metaphor of the law as a “spider’s web” that ensnares the weak while the powerful escape—an observation attributed to the ancient philosopher Anacharsis.

“This morning, I woke up to learn that the young Ms Comfort Emmanson has been banned from flying for life,” Obi wrote. “It once again demonstrates how our system functions—swift and harsh for the powerless, but lenient and accommodating for the privileged.”

He continued: “What due process was followed in arriving at such a drastic sanction? Were all avenues for justice and compassion truly explored? It is a tragic irony that a young woman can be penalised so severely, while many in authority commit graver offences that harm our nation deeply and yet face no consequences.”

Obi emphasized the need for a justice system rooted in fairness, not power. “If this young woman, who undoubtedly acted inappropriately, is now seeking forgiveness, who will listen to her in a country where the pain of the poor goes unnoticed and the dignity of the less privileged is so often ignored?”

He concluded by calling for a system that prioritizes compassion and rehabilitation over punishment. “Justice must be consistent; otherwise, it becomes nothing more than oppression. Power must never determine who is punished.”

The incident involving Emmanson follows another recent confrontation at the same airport, involving popular Fuji musician Wasiu Ayinde. He too has been placed on a temporary no-fly list, pending a full investigation. The NCAA has since petitioned the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Inspector-General of Police to probe the matter.
