The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, has clarified that he remains a member of the Labour Party, despite his association with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition.
Speaking at a rally to launch the Labour Party’s governorship campaign in Anambra State, Obi explained that the ADC coalition is a broader opposition alliance ahead of the 2027 elections, not a change in party affiliation.
“I want to clear the confusion,” Obi said. “Some are saying, ‘Obi is in ADC and Labour Party.’ Let me be clear: I, along with our National Assembly members, am part of the coalition that adopted ADC as a platform for 2027. But today, I am a member of the Labour Party.”
He urged supporters to affirm his current party membership while acknowledging the coalition’s long-term goals: “If anyone asks which party Peter Obi belongs to, tell them it’s the Labour Party. If they ask about the coalition, say yes, it’s for 2027.”
Obi also used the occasion to officially declare his intention to run for president again, saying he remains the best candidate for the job.
“Anyone has the right to run, but let it be known—I am in the race, and no one does it better than me,” he said.
He endorsed the Labour Party’s governorship candidate in Anambra, Dr. George Moghalu, describing him as “soft-spoken, focused, and an achiever,” and called on voters to support his campaign for good governance and people-focused leadership.
